We made it to Fort Irwin this week and have been staying in the hotel here on base. Scott is doing all the normal in-processing and checked into housing the other day. We are officially #9 on the waiting list which we're told is a 2-4 month wait...
This basically means we are on our own for finding a place to stay for that time. Which ordinarily wouldn't be a huge deal with most bases that have a city right off base. Fort Irwin is 32 miles away from the nearest city, and the drive from there to here is desert with nothing in between.
The dilemma is our household goods. It costs us $400 a month to keep them stored and if we found a cheap place semi furnished we could live with that. But if we are going to be waiting the total 4 months do we really want to be without our stuff for that long? At the same time what if we get into a place get our stuff in it and then 2/3 weeks later they tell us there is a house abailable....It's the unknown that is killing us. Not to mention we have 3 kids that need to be in school like NOW and I really want them to be enrolled on base because the thought of another transfer in a month or two is ridiculous. Which means I will be driving the commute between base and city everyday as well as Scott and that means the gas budget will be pretty high...
It's just one big stressful mess at the moment with lot's of unknowns....I hope some answers come clear soon because I am about ready to have a heart attack thinking about it all...
